The HMI HGIOS reportHow Good is our School – Self Evaluation using Quality Indicators is used for the Action section of each of the projects and targets for the following school session.  For 2002/03, the Lionel School Development Plan will contain two main projects focussed on the Curriculum and Resources and with three other projects on Resources, Support for pupils and Management, leadership and quality assurance

For 2002/03, the five projects will be:

Project 1 - Curriculum
Action 2002/03: To review the courses and programmes relating to 5-14 Environmental Studies.
Aim of the school: To provide a balanced, broad-based, timetabled curriculum, which will ensure that all pupils master basic skills in language and number, introduce them to various fields of knowledge, and prepare them for entering the adult world.
Project 2 - Resources
Action 2002/03: To implement the recommendations of the National Opportunities Fund for Information and Communications Technology, whereby all teachers will access formal training for curricular use of computers.
Aim of the school: To optimise our provision of resources, ensuring that we develop the best possible accommodation and facilities, and that these are made widely available to the school and the wider community as appropriate.  We will also ensure that school staff have opportunities to develop their careers through Continuing Professional Development and Quality Assurance programmes.
Project 3 - Resources
Action 2002/03: To review the arrangements to ensure health and safety throughout the school.
Aim of the school: To optimise our provision of resources, ensuring that we develop the best possible accommodation and facilities, and that these are made widely available to the school and the wider community as appropriate.  We will also ensure that school staff have opportunities to develop their careers through Continuing Professional Development and Quality Assurance programmes.
Project 4 - Support for pupils
Action 2002/03: To assimilate the priorities of the Education Department Curriculum Support Plan into the Lionel School Plan through in-service training.
Aim of the school: To support all our pupils by providing a caring, well-ordered, happy and secure environment, promoting mutual respect and co-operation among teachers, pupils and parents, fostering the social and moral welfare of our pupils, and providing curricular and vocational guidance.  We will also promote effective links with Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, other educational agencies, statutory establishments and organisations, and with employers.
Project 5 - Management, leadership and quality assurance
Action 2002/03: To update sections of the Lionel School Handbook according to the review dates, and thereafter to publish them onto the school website.
Aim of the school: To provide sound school management, by maintaining high quality standards in the school through effective consultation, communication, evaluation and monitoring, and by promoting professional competence and commitment of staff through development planning.

Quality Indicator 1.2 Curriculum Courses and programmes - integration, continuity and progression

To ensure that staff can attend in-service training suited to their needs
To liaise with Cluster Group colleagues to coordinate Environmental Studies
To update the 5-14 Environmental Studies policy
Timescale: This project should be completed by March 2003.
Resources: Time from the 35 contractual hours

Success criteria: The 5-14 Environmental Studies courses, programmes and policy have been reviewed and updated, and published on the school website

Quality Indicator 6.4 Resources Staffing - experience, qualifications and expertise of staff
Aim of the school: To optimise our provision of resources, ensuring that we develop the best possible accommodation and facilities, and that these are made widely available to the school and the wider community as appropriate.  We will also ensure that school staff have opportunities to develop their careers through Continuing Professional Development and Quality Assurance programmes.

Success criteria: The training needs of staff have been clearly identified
All staff have undergone an individualised training programme for ICT

Quality Indicator 4.8 Support for pupils Links with local authority or other managing body, other schools, agencies and employers - links with local authority or other managing body

Aim of the school: To provide sound school management, by maintaining high quality standards in the school through effective consultation, communication, evaluation and monitoring, and by promoting professional competence and commitment of staff through development planning.
