Curriculum

In Lionel School, we aim to provide a balanced, broad-based, timetabled curriculum, which will ensure that all pupils master basic skills in language and number, introduce them to various fields of knowledge, and prepare them for entering the adult world.

Key Strengths

No Quality Indicator Themes 4 3 2 1
1.1 Structure of the curriculum We offer a broad and balanced curriculum to our pupils at all stages.  The integration of pupils' personal and social capabilities, including cross-curricular aspects and ICT, permeate the school's curriculum.

Our timetables enable the curriculum to be offered efficiently, giving appropriate time and emphasis to each curriculum area, subject or mode.  The timetables are designed to allow setting in some secondary subjects based on prior attainment in mixed-ability classes.

1.2 Courses and programmes The breadth and balance offered in our curriculum gives full consideration to national and local guidelines, and is fully in keeping with the school’s aims.  The various elements of the curriculum are planned and taught in an appropriate sequence to meet the range of needs, abilities and aspirations of pupils, and to promote progression and continuity in pupils’ learning.  Productive links are made with other curriculum areas or subjects.

Teachers receive comprehensive and helpful guidance on programmes of work, learning and teaching, support for pupils and assessment and recording.  This support is through media such as local and national documentation, served CDROMs such as 'How Good Is Our School' available to all teachers on the school's local area network, and links through the school's website to sites such as the 5-14 Guidelines from Learning and Teaching Scotland.
