Ethos

To ensure a positive and supportive school ethos by stimulating in our pupils an awareness of their responsibilities, to develop a sense of identity and pride in the environment, history, language, culture and future development of their school and island home, and to widen their horizons by encouraging understanding of the wider world.  We will also promote effective links with Lionel School Board, Lionel School Parent Teacher Association, Lionel School Pupil Council and the wider community

Key Strengths

No Quality Indicator Themes 4 3 2 1
5.1 Climate and relationships Parents, pupils and staff generally identify with the school, and are pleased to be associated with it. The reception of parents and visitors is welcoming and well organised.  There are effective arrangements for consulting with pupils and involving them appropriately in decision making about the life and work of the school.  Staff handle any attendance and discipline problems in a caring but authoritative manner so that disruption to learning and teaching is minimised.

5.2 Expectations and promoting achievement Staff expectations of pupils’ achievement, attendance and behaviour are high, and pupils generally respond very positively to these aspects.  The school values, recognises and shares relevant achievements with peers, parents, families and the community.

5.3 Equality and fairness Equality of opportunity and a sense of fairness is evident throughout the school.  We try to ensure that all pupils, parents and school staff are treated with respect, fairly and in a just manner.  It is intended that staff, pupils and visitors to the school should feel valued, safe and secure.

5.4 Partnership with the School Board and the community Parents support, and participate in, the life of the school in a planned and purposeful manner. They are actively encouraged to be partners in homework, participate in out-of-school visits, and support other extra-curricular activities.  The Head Teacher has well-developed links with the School Board, and actively encourages Board members to be knowledgeable about, and involved in, the life of the school and its community.

The school makes a strong contribution to the life of the community and works with it by, for example, participating in events and contributing to the local media. Through the Parent Teacher Association, the school mounts a range of fund-raising and other events for the community.

Points for Action

5.4 Partnership with the School Board and the community We are awaiting the result of a European funding application to HISTP as the final part of a funding jigsaw to build a £2million sports centre adjacent to the school, with subsequent action dependent upon the HISPT response
