on 11 February 2005, jointly organised by the PTA and the Pupil Council.

|
Congratulations to Katy Hebditch, Chloe
Johnson, Kirsty Maclean, and Donald Scott Macleod of the Fashion Freaks who
have qualified for this stage of the Proshare UK competition. With
over 20,000 students from UK schools and colleges in the initial stages in

|
SSFA Coca-Cola Football Championship - Dingwall
|
Following a 1-0 victory over Plockton High
School, a 2-1 victory over Dingwall Academy, a 0-0 draw with Thurso High
School, and a 0-5 loss to Inverness Royal Academy, Lionel boys managed 7
points from their league group to qualify for the first time ever to a
play-off place in the SSFA Championship. Although they narrowly missed
going through to the next round due to a 1-0 play-off loss to Invergordon
Academy, the fact that Lionel used a number of boys as young as P6 against
much larger schools with Secondary only pupils was an excellent achievement.
Lionel girls entered this prestigious
tournament for the first time, and, although they did not manage to win any
games, they did not suffer any heavy defeats. A 0-1 loss against the
very good Nicolson girls was possibly their best result. |
|
Scottish Swimming Championship
|
Congratulations to Eilidh Maciver for a
magnificent 4th place in the Scottish Swimming Championships, following her
Gold medal in the Breast Stroke in the North of Scotland competition. |
|
Pupil Council fundraising for Tsunami Appeal

raised £127 for the Asian Tsunami Appeal, raising money for the Blythswood
Field Hospital to be located in the region of Indonesia devastated by
the Boxing Day tsunami. |
|
Hurricane force storm
|
The Western Isles endured hurricane force
winds over the night of Tuesday 11 January, and through to early Wednesday
12 January, reaching force 12, with 124 mph recorded in North Rona.
Lionel School escaped relatively lightly, with a number of slates lost.
However, electric power was only restored by noon on Friday, due to a broken
power line adjacent to the school grounds, meaning that the school was
closed for three days. |
|

CNES Best Value Review
|
A 'Best Value Review' of S1/S2 provision
commissioned by CNES has recommended that Lionel Secondary be closed from
2008. Lionel School Board convened an emergency public meeting on 17
December 2004, decided to form a sub-committee to survey public opinion, and
present various options regarding the future of the school for consideration
in a questionnaire. The findings will be explored at a future
School Board meeting. |

The Lionel School 5-a-side boys' team
participated in this Lewis and Harris competition, along with a Lionel
all-girls team called Lionel Fire. The Lionel Fire team did not get
through the group stage into the knock-out stages, but the boys' team came
top of their section, winning all their games. In the Quarter-final
stage, the boys beat Airidhantium 3-2, and then beat Lochs 3-0 in the
Semi-final. In the Final between Knock and Lionel, the game ended 1-1
at full time, and Knock were the team to score the winning goal in the two
minutes of extra time. Well done to Knock, and congratulations to

|
The first PTA fund-raising event for the new session was a disco on 12
November 2004, jointly organised by the PTA and the Pupil Council. The

|
The Sale of Work organised by Lionel School
Board on Saturday 30 October was very successful, raising just over £1100
for school funds. Home baking, a fancy dress competition, local
produce, various raffles and the sale of videos and DVDs all contributed to
the total. The school would like to thank the School Board, and
everyone in the local community for their support. |
|
Secondary teaching appointment
|
We would like to
congratulate Mrs Helen McCafferty on her successful appointment as the new
itinerant Science teacher for Lionel and Shawbost schools on 26 October

all the candidates addressed their fellow pupils at the election. We would like to
congratulate Jamie Gilroy and James Corbett for being elected as Primary
members of the Pupil Council, and also Katy Hebditch and Cailean Mackenzie
for being elected as the representatives of the Secondary pupils. |
|

|
We would like to wish
Mrs Mairi Martin well for the future, as she left Lionel School on 1
September 2004 to begin a new post at the Nicolson Institute, working as a Learning
Support teacher. |
|
Sponsored Walk
|
The
annual Sponsored Walk to raise money for school funds took place this year on
31 August on a
beautiful afternoon. The event was enjoyed by all who took part, and
a priority is to gather the sponsor money in to the school as soon as
possible. There is a prize for the pupil who collects the most
sponsorship money every session, to be presented at the School Prizegiving. |
|

We would like to wish Ms
