1.         Purpose of this English Department Staff Handbook

This handbook provides basic information about the department and its work which may be helpful to:

(i)            teaching staff in the department

(ii)         school management

(iii)        supply staff

(iv)            teaching staff in other departments of the school

(v)             interested groups and/or individuals from outside the school

            eg.  School Board, Parents, Advisory Staff, Directorate etc.

 

2.         Lionel School Aims

This English Department policy subsumes the general aims of Lionel School, which are detailed in the Lionel School Handbook.

 

3.         English Department Aims and Objectives

Aims:   There are six broad aims:

The Department should:

develop pupils' skills and knowledge so that they can progress to their full potential in  their ability to understand English and use it accurately.  

support pupils' personal development through language and literature, including intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, social and moral development.  

develop in all pupils a range of positive attitudes towards their own and each other's language development, including concern for tolerance,  enjoyment, co-operation and sharing  

provide a course having breadth, balance and cohesion which will build upon the previous work done in the subject in primary school and round off the pupils' education in the subject as a preparation for life.  

link meaningfully with work to be done at Standard Grade and beyond.
