FORMAL PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS

All the time Most of the time Some of the time Never

Meetings are arranged within the time slot which I chose     70      30        0       0
The event is well structured and organised     64      34        2       0
I get a chance to see the teachers I want to see     95        5        0       0
I feel I prefer the 4.00 – 7.30pm time slot for parents’ evenings     92        2        2       4
I feel I prefer the 7.00 – 10.30pm time slot for parents’ evenings     18        5      24     53
I get a chance to speak honestly about what concerns me     94        4        2       0
Teachers are frank and helpful with me     94        4        2       0
I come away feeling I have learned something useful     75      19        6       0

Comment:  Parents are increasingly very satisfied with the organisation and usefulness of formal Parents' Evenings.  Earlier time slots for Parents' Evenings have now been trialled for Secondary meetings, in addition to the existing early evening Primary meetings.  Overall, parents much prefer the earlier meeting times, although the school will continue to hold some Secondary meetings later in the evening to try to accommodate as many differing preferences as possible.

PARENTS AND THE SCHOOL

All the time Most of the time Some of the time Never

Most parents show support for the school     25      54      21       0
I feel I can also approach teachers apart from the set Parents Evenings     88      10        2       0
I am confident that I will get a fair hearing if I have to complain     82      14        4       0
I feel I prefer major school trips (eg to the continent) every year       2        2      44     52
I feel I prefer major school trips (eg to the continent) every second year     46      22      18     14
I feel I prefer major school trips (eg to the continent) every third year     10      20      35     35
The Handbook and website have explained the homework policy to me     76      24        0       0
The School Board seems to be a useful organisation for the school     69      25        6       0
The PTA seems to be a useful organisation for the school     75      25        0       0

Comment:  Many parents support the school practically when they can, and have a confident, secure and trusting relationship with the school.  It is clear that parents wish to have major school trips only every two years - and certainly not every year.  The School Board and the Parent Teacher Association are both increasingly valued by parents.

MY CHILD ...

All the time Most of the time Some of the time Never

should continue to be allowed to drink water with lunch in the canteen     90      10        0       0
should continue to be allowed to drink water in class     78      14        8       0
uses the water bottle supplied by the school for drinking in school     60      32        8       0
feels that there is a good choice of drinks     60      38        2       0
feels that there is a good choice of food     30      42      28       0
feels that the new menus offer healthier food options     20      60      18       2
prefers to eat the healthier menu items, rather than chips, burgers etc     18      50      32       0
prefers to eat a packed lunch from home     24      36      32       8
should have access to a canteen 'healthy snacks' Tuck Shop at breaks     32      44      16       8

Comment:  Parents fully support the school's efforts to provide their children with drinking water whenever practical, and are generally pleased with the choice of food and drinks available every day.  While the new menus devised by the 'Hungry for Success' initiative are designed to be healthier, there is clearly still work to be done to appeal to all pupils all of the time.  There is support for a proposal to possibly have a 'healthy snacks' Tuck Shop at break times.

Comment:  Parents are mostly happy with the extra-curricular activities on offer at the school.  Parents are very satisfied with the order and cleanliness of the school, and with the general approachability and helpfulness of the staff.  The school uniform is well liked, with the new uniform options of hooded tops and hats welcomed.  The Homework Club held over the Winter and Spring terms is a highly valued option by parents.  The school's website is perceived by parents as being useful, and it has been rated as 'excellent' by the Assisted Self Evaluation conducted by CNES, as well as formerly by the National Grid For Learning, Scotland.  The school continues to enjoy a good reputation within the community.  As far as parents are concerned, the preference is to hold the Lewis Mod in March, as opposed to June.

Comment:  Parents are unanimously opposed to the closure of the Lionel School Secondary department.  A very large proportion of parents agreed that they would like to see Lionel School upgraded, to at least Secondary 4 status.  In Shetland, schools are P1-S4 so as to support the local rural areas - it is probably not a coincidence that Shetland Council is also an outstandingly successful Local Authority regarding national examination results.  Gaelic-medium education has been a desirable option for most parents in the Primary department, and there is a clear desire to extend some form of Gaelic-medium provision to the Secondary department.
